George spent his early years on the family estate on Pope's Creek along the Potomac River. His father died in 1743, and soon George went to live with his half brother Lawrence at Mount Vernon.
George served in the Virginia's House of Burgesses in 1759-1774. In January, 1759 George married Martha Dandridge Custis. She was a wealthy young widow with two small children.They had no children together. Washington joined the Virginia militia in 1752. When Braddock was killed during the French and Indian War, he managed to stay calm and keep the unit together as they retreated home. After 1769, George became a leader in Virginia's opposition to Great Britain's colonial policies. Washington took command of the troops surrounding British-occupied Boston on July 3, devoting the next few months to training the 14,000 troops and trying to supply needed powder and other supplies.On March 1797, when Washington left office, the financial system was well established. George passed away on December 14, 1799 at age 67, due to a throat infection, Pneumonia.
