Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 - April 4, 1968)
When he was 33 years old, he was fighting the case of civil rights with president John Kennedy. When he was 34, he gave his "I Have a Dream" speech. When he was 35, he got a Nobel Peace Prize. When he was 39, he was MURDERED, but he left hope and inspiration that continues today.
Martin Luther King, Jr. born 1/15/1929, died 4/4/1968 was a clergyman, activist, and leader in the African- American Civil Rights Movements. Best known for his role in advancement of civil rights using non-violent civil bad behavior. He has became an icon in the history of American liberalism.
He was a Baptist minister and he became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, he was its 1st president. His efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where he gave his "I Have a Dream" speech. There, he established his reputation as one of the greatest people in history. He also began his reputation as a radical, and became an object of the FBI’s COINTELPRO for the rest of his life.
On 10/14/1964, he received a Nobel Peace Prize for fighting racial inequality through non-violence In the next few years leading up to his death, he enlarged his focus to include poverty and the Vietnam War—alienating many of his liberal allies with a 1967 speech titled "Beyond Vietnam". He was also planning an occupation of Washington, D.C., called the Poor Peoples Campaign.
He was MURDERED on 4/4/1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was created as a U.S. holiday in 1986. A lot of streets in the U.S. and more have been renamed in his honor.
Martin Luther King, Jr. original name was Michael Luther King, Jr., but then changed it to Martin. His grandfather began the family's long possession of pastors of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, working from 1914 to 1931; his father has worked from then until the present, and from 1960 until he died Martin Luther acted as a co-pastor. Martin Luther attended segregated public schools in Georgia, graduating from high school when he was fifteen; he received the B. A. degree in 1948 from Morehouse College, a distinguished- African American institution of Atlanta from which both his father and grandfather had graduated. After 3 years of theological study at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania where he was elected president of a white senior class, he was awarded the B.D. in 1951. With a fellowship won at Crozer, he enrolled in graduate studies at Boston University, completing his residence for the doctorate in 1953 and receiving the degree in 1955. In Boston he met and married Coretta Scott, a young woman of uncommon intellectual and artistic attainments. Two sons and two daughters were born into the family.
