Declaration Of Independence/ 4th Of July
4th of July
Independence Day is a national holiday that celebrates the Declaration of Independence which was made on July 4, 1776. Now today we celebrate 4th of July by setting off fireworks to thank the people that signed and wrote the document that gave us freedom and rights. We celebrate Independence Day every year. We think of the 4th of July as a day that gave birth to the U.S.A, but the 4th of July, 1776 was not the day Congress gave us Independence. It was on July 2, 1776. It was not the day that started the American Revolution either. That happened in April 1775. And it was not the day Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence. That was in June 1776. Nor was it the date that it was delivered to great Britain that was in November 1776 or the date it was signed that was August 2nd 1776. July 4th has been a federal holiday since 1941 but the tradition of independence day goes back to the 17th and 18th century and the American Revolution (1775-83). In June 1776 people of the 13 colonies fighting in a struggle to win freedom from Britain. on July 2nd congress voted in favor of Independence and 2 days later we had our independence.
