Once she finished school her parents let her work outside of home. She was working for an upholsterer. When working she fell in love with a man named John Ross.
Her family was not happy once they were married on November in 1773. Betsy was a Quaker and John wasn’t. Which met that Betsy could no longer be a Quaker. They later started their own upholstery business. In 1776 John joined the army. He was guarding the ammunition when it had exploded. Betsy nursed him, but it wasn’t enough. John Ross had died. On June 15, 1777 Betsy married Joseph Ashburn, her second husband. Joseph was taken prisoner in England. One of Joseph’s close friends, John Claypoole, had told Betsy that Joseph had been imprisoned and had died in 1782. Betsy later married Joseph’s friend, John Claypoole, in May 1783.
They had five children together. John died in 1817. Betsy and John were together for about twenty years. After John Claypoole died, Betsy continued her upholstery business for another decade. After she retired, she moved in with one of her daughters, Susanna. All together Betsy Ross had seven children. With Joseph she has Zilla and Elizabeth. With John Claypoole she had Clarissa, Susan, Rachel, Jane, and Harriet. Before that, during May 1776, a meeting occurred. George Washington, Robert Morris, George Ross, asked Betsy Ross to sew the first flag. In June 1776, George Washington, showed Betsy rough draft of what he would like the first flag to look like. The design included 13 stripes, red and white, with thirteen stars in a circle. Betsy Ross is still known and famous to this day for creating the first American flag.
