Harriet Tubman
* Harriet Tubman was born 1820 in Dorchester County and died March 1st, 1913. Her parents were Ben Ross and Harriet Green, but Harriet Tubman's real first name is Araminta Harriet Ross. At the age of 12 she was seriously injured by a blow to the head, inflicted by a white master for refusing to assist in tying up an man who had attempted escape.
* Harriet wanted to escape because she believed in freedom and that everyone should be free and treated equally. She made her first escape by herself but when she made it to freedom she felt guilty and went back to get her family.
* Harriet took the Underground Railroad to escape. The Underground Railroad was just a trail deep back in the woods and Harriet would always follow the north star to tell where to go.
* Harriet would then go to houses and would knock on the door and whisper "A friend of a friends." Then the householder would then open the door to see how many slaves she had with her and if she had to many sometimes, people would decline her because the people in the house would not want to get caught with slaves in their house. If you got caught with slaves in your house many times you were put in jail or killed.
* Harriet made 17-19 trips each 2 to 3 months in all of her trips she was never caught.
* On Harriet's third trip in September on 1851 she went back to get her husband John but, he had remarried. So in 1869 she remarried to Nelson Davies. Harriet Had no children with John but, had one daughter with Nelson.
* After Harriet escaped she served as a nurse, scout, and spy for the Union Army in South Carolina. She helped prepare food for the 54th Massachusetts Regiment composed entirely of black soldiers and known as the Glory Brigade.
